Surface Runoff

Surface runoff, a "non-point source" of pollution, is derived from precipitation that washes off roads. As water flows over asphalt, it picks up dirt and dust, rubber and metal deposits from tire wear, antifreeze and engine oil that has dripped onto the pavement.  Salt and other ice dissolving agents that are applied to roads in the winter months washes off roads and further contamination of soils.  These contaminants seep into our drinking water and pollute our regions lakes and streams despoiling nature and lead to numerous adverse health effects in humans.
