Environmental Education Offerings

TransOptions offers FREE environmental education programs to schools, corporations and community groups.  Each program is in compliance with NJ Core Curriculum Content standards and can me modified for presentation in Science, Health, Social and Environmental Studies classes. 
 
Junior Solar Sprints - The hands-on competition for middle schools wherein students design, build and race solar-powered model cars.  Student teams will be provided with essential materials.  Teams will compete in Division Races to advance to an Inter-County Final Race and ulimately winning teams go on to compete in a regional competition, hosted by the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association in Massachusetts.
 
Hydrogen Fuel Cell Model Car Challenge - This new hands-on competition, designed for high school students, involves the design, building and racing of Hydrogen-powered model cars.  Student teams will be provided with double fuel cells, battery packs and other essential materials.
 
It's All About...Energy - This in-class program examines renewable and non-renewable energy sources and their transformation into fuels for the use in transportation.  The program provides an historical perspective on fuel use in the United States, the effects of burning fossil fuels and today's emerging alternative energy sources.  This program also includes a hands-on tour of an alternative fuel vehicle.
 
Energy in the Home - The new in-class program that introduces student stot he relationship beween energy efficiency in the home and air quality.  Based on the "Change a Light, Change the World" approach to energy conservation, the program examines what we can do to save energy and slow the effects of global warming.
 
Energy Around the World - This program introduces student to the Kyoto Protocol and the steps other nations are taking to reduce greenhouses gas emissions and conserve energy.  It examines the myraid of energy sources used in countries around the world, air quality issues and the Kyoto Protocol.
 
MOVE IT! - This new program educates middle and high school students about the concepts of community design and what makes a safe walking environment.  Students use their skills to assess their school neighborhood, address safety issues around their school and brainstorm practical solutions.  The workshop will take two to three hours puls follow-up time with the students and teach to discuss implementation of the students' improvement ideas.
 
Energy Transformations in Transportation - One of the ways governments are addressing the issue of air quality is to replace municipally-owned vehicles (cars, buses and trucks) with Alternative Fuel Vehicles (AFV).  This program examines the steps being taken by NJ and serveral other states to affect these changes as well as mandates directed toward personally owned vehicles.
 
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - This program explores the "three R's" and their relationship to air quality.  Primarily designed for presentation in elementary schools, this program introduces students to the concept of burning trash to create energy, thereby reducing the burning of fossil fuels.
 
Daniel and His Electric Car - designed for presentation to K-2 students, this program combines a PowerPoint presentation with storytelling.  Through this story, students are introduced to the concept of alternatives to the use of gasoline and air quality issues.  It also demonstrates the pride garnered by being included in the family decision making process.
 
Teachers who are interested in how the programs are aligned to the NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards will be provided with Teacher Resources which describe the program, outline the correlations and provide additional classroom activities.
