Carpools & Vanpools

CARPOOLING - two or more people who share a ride to work. Carpoolers save money by sharing commuting costs and enjoy the companionship of a travel partner. Often an informal arrangement, carpoolers choose the times, days, and ways to travel together.

Are you already carpooling?  To register your carpool with TransOptions to be eligible for an ERH and other offers, fill out the form here.

VANPOOLING - 5-15 commuters sharing their ride to work. Vanpools are most cost efficient when your trip to work is at least 15 miles.  Riders pay a low monthly fare based on daily round-trip mileage and the number of riders in the van.  Fares cover all costs including gas, maintenance and insurance.

NJ Transit's Vanpool Sponsorship Program - Now vanpooling can cost even less - thanks to a new statewide vanpool sponsorship program run by  NJ TRANSIT with assistance from TransOptions and local vanpool vendors.
  • Eligible vanpool groups can qualify for $175.00 per month.
  • Support increases to $325.00 per month if the vanpool travels on New Jersey's High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes on the New Jersey Turnpike.
TransOptions Empty Seat Subsidy - When riders drop out of a vanpool, the monthly fare for the remaining passengers increases unless the empty seats are filled. In some instances, new riders cannot be found and the vanpool discontinues.  With this in mind, TransOptions offers temporary empty-seat subsidies to qualified vanpools commuting into our service area.
